Austin's first real cool front of the fall lands exactly on ACL Fest's opening weekend, with a 75% chance of rain Friday and 57% Saturday — a genuine shift after a summer of 100-degree highs. According to ATX Things analysis of this morning's forecast and four venues' own ticketing pages, three other things are also worth planning around in Austin, Texas this weekend: a rescheduled comedy headliner, the city's oldest Oktoberfest, and a Halloween train ride that's already selling out by the night.

Why this weekend's weather is suddenly the story

Thursday's high hits 89.4°F with a 66% chance of rain — already a preview of what's coming. Then the real drop: Friday's high falls to 80.8°F (75% rain chance), Saturday holds at 80.1°F (57%), and Sunday eases to 76.3°F with just a 33% chance, the clearest day of the four (Open-Meteo forecast, pulled the morning of Oct. 1, 2026). That's a 9- to 13-degree swing from Thursday's heat into a genuinely mild weekend — the kind of cool front Austin hasn't seen since spring.

Note

Rain forecasts this far out shift. Treat Friday and Saturday's numbers as "pack for it," not "it will definitely rain at this hour" — but do pack for it.

ACL Fest Weekend One opens Friday under that rain forecast

Austin City Limits Music Festival's 25th-anniversary weekend runs Friday through Sunday, Oct. 2–4, at Zilker Park, headlined by Charli XCX, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Twenty One Pilots, Lorde and Skrillex across the three days.

What's still available, checked this morning: Saturday is sold out as a single-day ticket for Weekend One, but Friday and Sunday 1-Day General Admission remains on sale starting at $170, and 3-Day GA is still available for Weekend One starting at $390 — a change from where tickets stood just three days ago, when 3-day and single-day Friday/Saturday passes were waitlisted. If you've been holding off, Friday and Sunday are your way in.

The rain gear question, straight from ACL's own support site: ponchos are the festival's recommended rain gear — umbrellas are a prohibited item, full stop. Bag policy hasn't changed for the rain: small clutches and fanny packs up to 6"x9" don't need to be clear, but anything bigger does, capped at 12"x6"x12". Pack a poncho, not an umbrella, and expect muddier ground by Saturday afternoon if Friday's 75% chance delivers.

Gabriel Iglesias brings "The 1976 Tour" to Moody Center Friday

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias plays Moody Center on Friday, Oct. 2 — a rescheduled date, originally booked for April 23 earlier this year. Parking opens at 6 PM, doors at 7 PM, and the set starts at 8 PM, with tickets starting at $54 through Ticketmaster, AXS and Live Nation. No posted age restriction, though the venue's usual clear-bag policy applies at the door.

If ACL's Friday rain chance has you looking for an indoor plan instead, this is the counter-programming: same night, same part of town (UT campus/Central), zero chance of mud.

AustOberfest turns Scholz Garten into Austin's oldest beer hall Saturday

Saturday, Oct. 3, noon to 10 PM, the Austin Saengerrunde's 14th annual AustOberfest takes over Scholz Garten — Austin's oldest continuously operating bar, est. 1866 — at 1607 San Jacinto Blvd downtown. Two Tons of Steel headlines, with Sour Bridges, Off the Grid and DJ Vegan Leather filling out the bill. The first 500 guests through the door get a free half-liter stein, drafts run $5 in the Halle, and the sausage-sampling competition runs 1–4 PM.

Kids under 12 get in free for the noon-to-4-PM family block — face painting, games, and a costume and yodeling contest. It's also a qualifying stop for the 2026 Texas Steinholding Championship, and the venue's six historic bowling lanes stay open all day, which doubles as the obvious move if Saturday's 57% rain chance actually shows up.

Boo at the Zoo starts this weekend too — and it's already selling by the date

Austin Zoo's Boo at the Zoo runs Friday and Saturday nights this week (Oct. 2 and 3), 5:45–9 PM, with a second weekend Oct. 9–10. Tickets are sold per specific night — $25 each, no refunds or changes — directly through the zoo's own ticketing site, not bundled with regular zoo admission. That price covers entry, unlimited visits through the haunted house (there's a scarier and a not-scary option), and one reserved train-ride seat; kids under 2 ride free on an adult's lap.

"

"We had the best time at Austin Zoo with the kiddos! The kids absolutely loved seeing all the animals, exploring the different play areas, and enjoying the fun atmosphere. One of our favorite parts was the train ride — the kiddos adored it so much!" — Servanda Navarro, Google review

Heads Up

Each night sells as its own ticket (separate listings for Oct. 2, 3, 9 and 10) — buying for the wrong date gets you turned away at the gate, since the zoo's policy is no refunds and no changes.

What locals should know

  • Pack a poncho for ACL, not an umbrella — umbrellas are banned at the gate, and Friday's rain chance sits at 75%.
  • Saturday is sold out for ACL Weekend One as a single-day ticket; Friday and Sunday 1-Day GA is still live at $170, and 3-Day GA reopened at $390 as of this morning.
  • Gabriel Iglesias is the indoor backup plan for Friday night if the ACL mud isn't your scene — doors 7 PM, show 8 PM, from $54.
  • AustOberfest's bowling lanes are the rain-day fallback on Saturday if the 57% chance comes through.
  • Boo at the Zoo tickets are date-specific — $25, no changes — so double-check you're buying Friday's or Saturday's listing before you check out.
