Do Austin rooftop bars charge a cover?
We do not have cover charges for any of these, so we are not going to pretend otherwise. What is generally true downtown: hotel rooftops usually let you walk in without paying, and where a charge appears it tends to be a weekend or special-event thing rather than a standing door price. Ring the venue if a cover would change your plan.
Which of these is on Rainey Street?
One: Geraldine's, four floors up at Hotel Van Zandt, with live music most nights on the indoor stage and a pool bar outside. The rest of this list is the downtown core, the Campus District and one on Riverside overlooking Lady Bird Lake — Rainey has plenty of bars but very few rooftops.
Which has the best view?
We have not stood on all ten with a camera, so we will not rank them. The one that claims the most height is Azul, twenty floors up on the Westin Austin Downtown. Otopia, on the eleventh floor of The Otis in the Campus District, is the one that gets you Hill Country as well as skyline. P6 and Nido are the two aimed squarely at the water — Town Lake and the Congress Avenue bridge.
Which are cheapest?
El Cockfight is the only $$ entry on this list, and the only one of the 10 that is not attached to a hotel — daily happy hour, live music, mezcal and Oaxacan cocktails. Everything else runs $$$ or $$$$, with Geraldine's and Nido at the top. Hotel rooftops price like hotel rooftops.
When should I go?
The hour before sunset, in practice — the light is at its best and the deck has cooled off, which in an Austin summer is not a small thing. Weeknights are calmer than Friday and Saturday. Two of these publish limited hours: Rules & Regs is Wednesday to Saturday 5pm–11pm, and Edge Rooftop opens at 6pm.

Why Austin's rooftops are mostly hotels
9 of the 10 bars on this page sit on top of a hotel, and that is not a coincidence. Downtown Austin's tall buildings are overwhelmingly offices and hotels, and only one of those two has a reason to put a bar and a pool on the roof. The upside is genuine skyline and Lady Bird Lake views from the Westin, the Marriott, the JW Marriott, the Fairmont, the Proper, The LINE, Hotel Van Zandt, The Otis and The Loren. The downside is hotel pricing, which is why nine of these are $$$ or $$$$.
El Cockfight is the exception worth knowing: a downtown rooftop patio that is not attached to a hotel, with a daily happy hour, live music, and a drinks list built on mezcal, tequila and Oaxacan cocktails. If the hotel-lobby register is not what you are after, start there.
Hours, pools and what to expect
Several of these are as much restaurants as bars. La Piscina does upscale coastal Mexican with tableside fajitas and frozen margaritas by the pool at the Austin Proper; P6 runs Mediterranean small plates over Town Lake; Otopia does Tuna Wonton Tacos eleven floors up with the Hill Country behind the skyline. Geraldine's puts live music on an indoor stage most nights and a bar next to an outdoor pool.
Two publish restricted hours: Rules & Regs opens Wednesday to Saturday, 5pm to 11pm, and Edge Rooftop runs 6pm to midnight daily. For the rest, weekend evenings fill with hotel guests and walk-ins at the same time, so book if you want a terrace table rather than a spot at the rail.
