Austin FC hosts Nashville SC at Q2 Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Austin, Texas, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Central. Nashville leads MLS and is the only team already guaranteed a playoff spot; Austin is 13th in the West and needs to climb into the top nine. The forecast says dry and 86° at kickoff, so the real problems are getting in and getting there.

Heads Up

Austin FC's own schedule page lists this match at "8:30 PM." That is Eastern time. Ticketmaster, SeatGeek and the club's Facebook announcement all say 7:30 p.m. Central, and so does the club's ticket link. Plan on 7:30.

What is actually at stake on Saturday?

A lot for one team and not much for the other, which makes for an odd night. Per MLS's own playoff preview, Austin FC (31 points, 7-10-10) is No. 13 in the Western Conference and has "the most difficult matchup" of the week against the Supporters' Shield leaders. The same piece says seeds 8 through 13 in each conference are separated by five points or fewer, so the table is bunched, not settled.

Verde All Day, a reader-supported Austin FC site, laid out the math Wednesday: Austin plays Nashville at home, then LAFC on the road on Oct. 14, then Vancouver at Q2 on Oct. 17, and to reach the playoff play-in the team has to finish in the top nine of the West. Nashville, the site notes, is the only MLS team guaranteed a postseason berth so far.

We wrote on Sept. 7 that Austin's playoff hopes were basically dead. They are still a long shot. They are not over, according to MLS's own numbers.

The match streams on Apple TV, per the club's match page. Austin Texas Things has not been inside Q2 this season, so everything below on stadium rules comes from the club and stadium websites, read Oct. 7.

What time do I need to be there?

Working backward from a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, using the stadium's published rules:

The club says check the Austin FC app for gate-time updates. If you want to see what happens around the stadium before the match, SeatGeek's listing for this game says a pre-match party starts at 4:30 with $4 beers and live music. We could not confirm that on the club's own site for Saturday. Its activation page, which covers the previous home match, listed the same lineup in Live Oak Park, on the northeast side of the stadium.

Can I bring a bag?

Almost certainly not, and that includes clear bags. This is the rule most likely to surprise someone who just came from a concert.

Per the club's bag policy, Q2 Stadium prohibits all bags, backpacks and other carriers, clear ones included. After screening, these are allowed:

  • A clutch or purse no bigger than your hand (about 8 by 5 by 1 inches)
  • Medical bags
  • Childcare bags, if you are with a child
  • Cultural bags

Lockers cost $10 and sit at the Northwest and Southwest gates, first come, first served. The policy says they open 45 minutes before gates and stay open for an hour after the event. A third party runs them, and the stadium says it is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Pro Tip

Two other rules from the same guide matter in heat. Empty reusable bottles of 30 ounces or less are allowed in, and YETI water stations sit in the southeast and northwest corners. And Q2 is cashless: if you only have bills, the Guest Services Center on the main concourse behind Section 124 exchanges cash for "ATXFC Cash."

How hot will it be?

Hot at arrival, cooler by kickoff. Open-Meteo's forecast for the stadium's coordinates, pulled Oct. 7, has Saturday's temperature at about 90°F at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., 89°F at 6, 86°F at 7 and 83°F at 8, with a rain chance of 0% for each of those hours. Feels-like numbers run a few degrees lower once the sun is down.

That is the arrival problem, not the kickoff problem. The arrival window and the walk from a far lot are the hot part of the evening. Forecasts three days out move, so check again Saturday afternoon.

Where do I park, or how do I skip parking?

If you drive, the stadium's parking page strongly urges you to pre-buy a pass on SeatGeek. All passes are mobile and all payments are cashless. The stadium lists four lots:

  • Ford East Lot: enter from Aguilar Street off Braker Lane.
  • North Lot: enter McKalla Place and drive up West Road. Scanning happens at Bright Verde Way and West Road.
  • Southwest Lot: enter from McKalla Place off Rutland Drive.
  • Teal Lot: the stadium notes it opens later on weekday evenings, but this is a Saturday.

Q2 sits at the southeast corner of Burnet Road and Braker Lane, per the stadium's directions page. Austin Texas Things has no drive-time data for this piece, because this desk had no driving-directions service available today. Do not take a time estimate from us. Open a maps app for Saturday afternoon traffic.

The stadium's alternatives, in its own words:

  • MetroRail Red Line to McKalla Station, which the stadium says drops you on the east side.
  • CapMetro bus: the stadium says Rapid 803 runs at least every 8 minutes on match days and stops in front of the stadium, and Route 383 runs every 15 minutes from the North Lamar Transit Center and Pavilion Park & Ride. Check capmetro.org/special-events/Q2 for Saturday's actual schedule, since the stadium's page is not dated.
  • Rideshare: the stadium's Uber drop-off is on the east side on Delta Drive, accessed via Metric. There is no pickup at the drop-off zone after the match; use the posted post-match pickup locations.
  • Bike: a free valet is on the east side of the stadium.

What should locals know before they go?

  • Alcohol: two drinks per person per trip to the counter, ID for anyone who looks 30 or younger, and no alcohol in from outside. Service stops at the 80th minute for most of the stadium, per the A-Z guide.
  • Tickets: all mobile. The club says to download the Austin FC and Q2 Stadium app.
  • Lost something: the lockers are third-party. The policy points to GuestServices@AustinFC.com.
  • Phone service: text 35-ASK-VERDE for help during an event, per the stadium's directions page.
  • Same weekend: ACL Fest's second weekend is Friday through Sunday at Zilker, across town. Our heat-gear guide covers it. If you are choosing between the two, they do not overlap in space: Zilker and Q2 are on opposite sides of town.
