What is Neon Rodeo?
Neon Rainbows started as a small dance party roughly 15 years ago, where LGBTQ+ Austinites could learn to two-step without the usual honky-tonk baggage. Today it's a standing community with a regular calendar — line-dance nights at the Sagebrush, queer country film screenings, a recurring party called Stampede at the Highball — and tonight it graduates to Austin's biggest concert room, ACL Live at the Moody Theater on West Willie Nelson Boulevard, for one night only.
"It started as a dance party about 15 years ago, and then it really grew into its own community and lifestyle," Neon Rainbows founder Ed West told CBS Austin's We Are Austin ahead of the show.
Neon Rodeo is presented by ACL Live and Neon Rainbows, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce Education Fund.
Who's performing
The bill mixes a hometown band, Austin's best-known drag performer, and a touring novelty act:
- Next of Kin — an Austin band West calls "hometown heroes."
- Brigitte Bandit — the Austin drag queen and LGBTQ+ activist (real name Cheri Lake) who's testified at the Texas Capitol and been named the city's best drag performer by the Austin Chronicle. Expect the sequined, Dolly Parton-adjacent persona regulars know from her Tuesday political drag nights at Oilcan Harry's.
- The Cowgays — flying in from Nashville for the night, per West.
- Ed West hosts.
"We have Next of Kin, hometown heroes. We have Brigitte Bandit, Austin's best drag performer... and then we also have the Cowgays coming in from Nashville," West said. Between sets, a marketplace of queer-owned local vendors — EMSBRYNART, Lone Star Queer, Cousin Kenny's, Muyinza, Pride Socks, The Little Gay Shop, Eastside Pop Up, and Finery — sets up in the lobby.

Getting in and getting there
ACL Live at the Moody Theater
