The Front Festival turns 10 this week, and it opens tonight at 7 PM with a sunset pool party. According to ATX Things' review of the festival's own event pages, four days of independent music, film and art — curated by the Austin nonprofit Future Front — run Thursday through Sunday at three venues across the city, and every ticket funds a decade-old program that has put $1 million back into Texas artists' pockets.
What is The Front Festival, exactly?
The Front Festival is Future Front Texas' end-of-summer showcase, and it has one rule baked into its mission: Texas women and LGBTQ+ artists go at the front of the lineup. Future Front started in 2014 as, in the nonprofit's own words, "a scrappy, grassroots collective of women and LGBTQ+ artists, small business owners and creative leaders." It's now a 501(c)(3) arts and culture organization running a creative space in East Austin that pulls in more than 25,000 visitors a year. The Front Festival is one of its two flagship annual events — the other is The Front Market — and this year's music night marks its 10th edition. Everybody is welcome, per the festival's own site — this isn't a members-only or invite-only event, even though it centers a specific community.
What happens each day?
Four distinct events, four different moods, one continuous four-day pass if you want it:
- Thursday, Aug. 27 — Opening Night Swim. Doors 7–11 PM at The LINE Hotel Austin. A three-hour poolside DJ set from Ed West of Neon Rainbows, snacks from Veracruz Tacos, a bar menu from the hotel's Cantero restaurant, and lobby art installations from five Texas artists (Seth Prestwood, OPAL Rugs, Dave McClinton, Angy Che and Sophia Gonzalez).
- Friday, Aug. 28 — Independent Music Night. Doors 6–11 PM at Swan Dive, in partnership with the Red River Cultural District. Live sets and talks built around women and LGBTQ+ musicians shaping Austin's rap, R&B and experimental hip-hop scenes — the night that specifically marks the festival's 10-year anniversary.
- Saturday, Aug. 29 — Independent Film Night. Doors 7–11 PM on the grounds of The Contemporary Austin — Laguna Gloria. A panel and performance before sunset, then 12 independent films by women and LGBTQ+ Texas directors and writers, screened outdoors by Lake Austin.
- Sunday, Aug. 30 — Closing Pool Party. Doors at noon, back at The LINE Hotel, with DJs Riobamba and BAD APPLE closing things out.
The film lineup includes Firewall, an Austin filmmaker's narrative adaptation of a story from Persian mythology's national epic, the Shahnameh, starring Eman Esfandi and Nazanin Nour — one of several genuinely notable shorts on a bill that also includes Love, Jamie, about a Texas artist's decades in a men's prison, and three more Texas-made films from directors of Mexican, Filipino and South Asian descent.
What does it cost, and where do I buy tickets?

Weekend passes are $55–$100 depending on when you buy. Tickets are free for Future Front members, and swim-session tickets are also free for LINE Hotel guests. Every dollar of ticket revenue supports Future Front's programs, which the nonprofit says have distributed $1 million in creative commissions and honorariums to Texas artists over the past decade.
This is an 18+ event at both swim sessions. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Capacity at the pool sessions is limited, so don't wait until Thursday afternoon to grab a pass if the sunset swim is the one you want.
Where exactly are these three venues?
All three sit within about a 15-minute drive of each other via Lamar or MoPac, so a weekend-pass holder isn't stuck in one part of town — Thursday and Sunday are downtown on the lake, Friday is a few blocks north in the Red River Cultural District, and Saturday moves west to the sculpture garden at Laguna Gloria in Tarrytown.
Why does the heat make this timing work?
Austin is still sitting inside a serious heat dome — 102.9°F Wednesday, with highs staying in the low-to-mid 100s through the weekend, according to National Weather Service-sourced forecast data. Every Front Festival event this year is scheduled for evening or after sunset, which is exactly the move: doors at 7 PM Thursday and Saturday, 6 PM Friday, and even Sunday's noon start is a pool party, not a stand-in-the-sun affair. Saturday's film night specifically times its panel for "before sunset" and the screening itself for after dark by the lake.
What locals should know
- It's genuinely a four-day commitment if you want the full arc — swim, music, film, swim — but every single day is also a standalone ticket if you only want one night.
- Friday's Swan Dive show is the actual 10th-anniversary night for The Front Festival specifically, even though Future Front the organization has been running programs since 2014.
- Saturday's film screening is outdoors on the Contemporary Austin's Laguna Gloria grounds — bring a layer for after dark even in late August, and expect grass/lawn seating.

Is The Front Festival only for LGBTQ+ attendees? No. The festival centers Texas women and LGBTQ+ artists in its lineup and programming, but the festival's own materials state plainly that "everybody" is welcome to attend.
